Does reaction time really decline with age?

You are edging toward thirty and you just fumbled a catch you would have nailed at twenty. So you tell yourself: that's it, my reflexes are going. First the bad news: yes, reaction time declines with age. It is measured, documented, not up for debate. Now the good news: the slope is far gentler than you think, and you have real control over it. Most people lose their reflexes not because they got older, but because they stopped using them.

Let's set the scene with honest numbers. Human reaction time peaks around age 24, then degrades by roughly 1 to 2 milliseconds a year. By 60, the average is 30 to 40 percent slower than at 20. An analysis reported by PBS NewsHour using data from StarCraft players lands on the same spot: it is in the early twenties that the brain processes information fastest.

Before that, the wiring is not finished. A teenager has explosive but erratic reflexes. After 24, raw speed starts to erode, slowly. Here is the part nobody mentions: the decline is tiny and near-linear for decades. Between 25 and 45, you lose a few dozen milliseconds total. Why reaction speed slows down
