Why 100 ms is a wall, not a target

Athletes who spent their lives optimizing that fraction of a second, on the fastest stimulus to process (sound), top out barely above the bar. That tells you how solid the wall is. A gamer, however good, has no reason to beat an Olympic sprinter paid to do exactly this.
Hold on to the distinction, because it changes everything: reacting and anticipating are two different things. Reacting means processing an unexpected signal. Anticipating means predicting when it drops and moving right before. The wildest scores never come from a true reaction. They come from a brain that guessed the rhythm.

- Anticipation. The most common trick. On a test where green appears after a roughly regular delay, the brain learns the rhythm and clicks just before. That is no longer a reaction, it is a prediction. It produces impossible scores and plenty of false starts when the guess misfires.
- Display and input latency. An online test adds 5 to 15 ms just between the frame showing and the click registering. Usually against you, but a badly timed refresh can flatter a lone score.
- Pure luck. Over enough attempts, one click lands by accident at exactly the right moment. One run proves nothing. The average over twenty runs does.
The common-sense rule: any score under 120 ms on a consumer test, without hardware-controlled gear, deserves a raised eyebrow. The real elite numbers, those of Formula 1 drivers and professional gamers, sit around 150 to 180 ms. Fast, measurable, honest. Not magic.
Where you actually land, and how to know
Forget the record, it is not for you and it is not for me either. The only useful question: where you land on the real scale. Average around 250 ms, fast under 200 ms, trained between 150 and 180 ms. The good news is that this zone is trainable, unlike the 100 ms wall, which never budges. A few weeks of regular practice is enough to shave 10 to 20 percent, if you train on genuinely unpredictable signals.
